I haven’t posted in ages. There are a few reasons for this, none of which anyone wants to hear 😉
BUT. I’ve started a few YA novels over the past few years that read really young to me, so I stopped. And then Christa Desir suggested I write MG since the last YA she read for me, was a little young. And so I jumped in and tried to find a bunch of MG novels that seemed like “Jolene type” MG novels… SO.
Here’s what I’ve been reading:
Flipped – Pretty adorable, but the way the narrative overlapped made me a little crazy. I’m well aware this is a “Jolene pet peeve” thing. I did read the whole book. And I did love the book.
THE BOY ON CINNAMON STREET – I’m so in love with this. SO. I downloaded another from the author the minute I finished.
THE PARIS ARCHITECT – Yes! I sometimes read books for grownups! (but only for book club). This book had some issues for me (namely two of the most beautiful women in France both after the MC – this is when you know the book was written by a man) but a very cool premise. As a Poli Sci major, I spent a good deal of time learning about WWII, so this was extra fun from that angle.
SHUG – You really can’t go wrong with Jenny Han. A great first kiss with a fantastic look at what happens when you really get to know someone, and what you see then, versus what you see from the outside. Love it.
EIGHT KEYS – This was a great little read. Fab at showing what happens when friends start to drift apart in middle school.
STUNG – I love SHIFTING by Wiggins, so I wanted to check out this series. I still like SHIFTING better, but then I’m just in love w/ that book. This one was also fantastic. CRAZY cool premise, and fascinating world-building.
SEX & VIOLENCE – I’ll re-read this one for sure. I can’t say enough good things about it. Deals with PTSD, and friendships and family relationships and love and moving beyond our past all with fantastic writing, great voice, and a setting I loved… I’m just crazy in love with this book.
These are what I think I’m going to read next, but then… you know. Moods change…etc… My daughter wants to read CINDER, so I need to check it out first. EVERYONE is raving about Andrew Brawley, and Shaun seems like a really cool guy from the bits of convos we’ve had online, and the book just sounds amazing. DEEP DOWN POPULAR becuase I loved CINNAMON STREET so much. And BIG FISH for my book club, and because that movie is on my short list of fav-evers.
What’s everyone else reading? And if anyone has some great CONTEMPORARY MG recs, I’d love them!!
